Jane It's the story of children in a place, that essentially claims them, although one child, the main character, is there for two summers only. The children meet and become enormous in each other's lives, even after they are no longer together. Their reconnection is the story. Drabble's sentences are, as usual, beautiful. There's a way in which the narration seems to be trying too hard to be post modern at times. I could have done without that. But the childhood sections were extraordinary. And the span of the novel, its take on aging and ambition, disappointment and love, is impressive to me.
