bookshelves: icky-sex, tastes-like-people, the-end
Read from March 03 to 05, 2012

so this is why i hate reviewing advanced readers' copies. after the thrill of "yayyyyy, i have something that youuuu don't have" wears off, i am stuck here with a book that was good, but didn't blow my mind. and now i have to be all critical about it, and it can't even defend itself yet. and it is probably one of those books that is going to be wildly successful and then i will be the lone voice in the wilderness on record as not loving it and all the internet will laugh at me.

not that i lack the courage of my convictions.

it's just hard being me, sometimes.

this is another post-apoc story that wants us to reexamine what it means to be human. okay, i can do that. if only it weren't so frustrating to be asked to do it so often, and so shallowly, all the time.i'm not saying the book is shallow - it has some great moments in it, and a lot of the writing is taut and appealing. but i get so fed up with characters in situations like these who keep trying to hold on to moral structures that no longer apply to their circumstances. seriously, cast of walking dead - recognize that you just cannot rebuild the world that was on top of the embers of the world that is. time to start over. new game plan. stop with the talking and the nicey-nice and man up. and this, too. it is great to have the impulse to save the young blind girl from the creepy advances of the male members of her family, but the reality of the two of you making your way through the blighted landscape with limited resources and "people" who want to kill and eat you? that right there is a burden you have accepted. and if you choose to take on that burden, sometimes you gotta take a life. no? you refuse? interesting choice. hope that doesn't come back to - oh, look out!

it's nice to want to give food to strangers passing by. it is nice to retain the vestiges of humanity. and i am not saying you have to become a blood-smeared warrior with a string of ears on your belt, but at some point this pollyanna attitude become unrealistic. but i suppose it is the impulse of a person who carries around a sealed and unread letter for most of the book. a person without curiosity, who is fine as a literary-person standing in for an idea(l), but i like to read these books for tips i can actually use. no role model for me, here.

the structure is a good call - shifting in between "now" and "then" - bringing the two stories ever closer together. she has a good sense of timing and drama, and it is a book i found myself flying through, wanting to know its secrets. so, a good page-turner. but there are times when you just want to pat her on the head and say, "there, there, dearie, not everything needs to be a metaphor." because it sometimes gets away from her.

he jerks me backwards and pulls me against him until his gut it a stuffed IHOP pancake bulging against my back.

she doesn't know that i'm making it up as i go along. pulling it out of my ass like my butt is a magician's hat.

etcetera.

the less i say about the romantic plot, the better. there is no level on which it makes sense to me.

ditto on the "bad guy." pure horror-movie indefatigable meta-evil that is too cartoonish to be threatening.

but not bad overall, despite my growling. i am probably just being overpicky. i thought it started out wonderfully, but somewhere along the way, it lost itself, and kind of muddled on to an ending that made me shrug and say, "whatever, you win, i give up."

and those of you that have this on your YA shelves?? get it off immediately. go on, do it. this is most definitely not for a YA audience. rape and incest and massive human and animal deaths, cannibalism, mutants, that i can see, but (view spoiler)[corkscrew-abortion??? (hide spoiler)] that goes one step too far. and i doubt a YA audience would believe the love story, either.

Christy Ooh, this looks good! I really hope it's as good as it looks. Looking forward to your review. :-)

message 2: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Please tell me this is named after the Taylor Swift song.

karen man, i don't know anything about taylor swift! i know she is a lady. and she sings, and that's all i know. is her song about a plague-like situation where 90% of the world dies off? that would be a nice ditty.

message 4: by Jen (new)

Jen Wait. This isn't a reference to Revelation? http://bible.cc/revelation/6-2.htm
And here is a song about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ckfax4...

karen no, of course it is, i was just kidding about the taylor swift. i didn't figure her songs were that dark! she's so...perky.

message 6: by Evan (new)

Evan Leach Great review, Karen.

message 7: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine wait a pancake?

message 8: by karen (last edited Mar 06, 2012 05:55pm) (new) - rated it 3 stars

karen a stuffed pancake.

message 9: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine i don't understand either of those metaphors. his stomach is like a pancake... how is a stomach like a pancake.

not to mention the fact that the other one is just stupid repetitive.

message 10: by Joel (new)

Joel i fear for this author's metaphor-rich take on a sex scene.

message 11: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Can we talk about Walking Dead for a minute? Dale was making his pitch last week, where he was like, have we lost civilization-on-on-on, or whatever, and I was like, yes, Dale, you have. There are walking corpses; quit being so Dale-like.

But then some cool, gross stuff happened, and I was pacified.

message 12: by Joel (new)

Joel i should probably catch up on that show so i can join the conversation.

message 13: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Do.

message 14: by Joel (last edited Mar 06, 2012 10:02pm) (new)

Joel just as long as you promise to nerd out with me about breaking bad in a few months. game of thrones... eh. hard to get excited about the plot when you know what happens for the next four seasons.

message 15: by Ceridwen (last edited Mar 06, 2012 10:20pm) (new)

Ceridwen I think NSP is your man for Breaking Bad nerding. I haven't been as dutiful in my watching, but I will try to get back on board.

karen i am also your nerd for bb.

karen walking dead is a very frustrating show. there are so many parts of it that are great, but you have to listen to too many people talk. sssh - griping attracts zombies, i hear...

message 18: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Characters who aren't curious are a huge peeve of mine--thanks for the warning! It drives me nuts. I'm always shouting at them through the pages to open the letter, open the diary, open the box, etc....

karen i know!! there is no purpose for waiting other than frustrating your audience. fools.

message 20: by Greg (new)

Greg The cover of this book doesn't look like it would have rape and incest in it. It looks so peaceful.

karen yeah, but what is that horse running from???

message 22: by Greg (new)

Greg That's true, it's probably running away from all the icky-sex!

karen well, there isn't any true bestiality in this book.

karen used to be a comment like that would summon mfso....

message 25: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Do you have to mention twincest?

karen i don't know anymore. he must be packing. (LGM) the second sentence of the final paragraph was also for him....

message 27: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I have no idea what bb is about; it is nerdy?

karen no, not at all, but joel wanted someone to "nerd out" with; to be all fannish. and i am definitely fannish. it is a great show that keeps getting better with every season.

message 29: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen There is a chemistry teacher....

karen you're right. i take it back, miriam, it is wicked nerdy. he is just like the chemistry teacher i had in high school.

message 31: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen (Sorry, Miriam. I am just being lame. A chemistry teacher is diagnosed with cancer, then decides to cook meth to make money. Then, some things happen that are bad.)

karen you are not lame, you are accurate!

and yes! he experiences a couple of difficulties.

message 33: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Just a couple. None of them are gross.

I thought this was really cool when it was posted around the web a while ago. It's all the pov shots from inside objects from BB. Of course, there are spoilers galore if you can figure out what the hell is happening.

karen roomba!

message 35: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen I liked that one too.

karen that was cleverly edited - some things looked like one scene, when in fact they were several. i like teevee geeks.

message 37: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen There's been a bunch of supercuts recently that awe me with their obsessiveness. Do they have to watch the entire series again to get five minutes of footage, let alone the time to cut the footage pleasingly? The mind, it boggles.

karen oh, that is fantastic. love that. also - can't wait. some of us are still martin-unspoiled...

message 40: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen I still haven't read the most recent. I feel like I have to wait for summer vacation though.

karen i am going to be totally lame and read them after the show. i liked the first book, though. i really like watching the show, not knowing what is going to happen. this is a first for me. but i am looking forward to the show more than is healthy. eeeeee!! (view spoiler)[i bought the first season for my dad. it is sitting right here, but i am resisting tearing it open (hide spoiler)]

All Things Urban Fantasy Just DNF tagged this one. The incestuous rape scene in the beginning was more than enough to quit reading. Glad I didn't make it to abortion scene.

karen yeah, it is pretty rough.

message 44: by Christina (new)

Christina Question. The idea that "human beings are no longer a viable species" does not compute. What IS the viable species? The book blurb sounds so completely unrealistic, that I can't imagine the story being something I could buy into. If humans are not viable, are there aliens involved? Then, it might make sense. It's just a weird bit to include in the blurb.

karen they aren't aliens - they are more like - mutants? it is a strange phrasing

message 46: by Christina (new)

Christina Oh! Seems strange they wouldn't have included something along those lines. Thanks!

message 47: by Nicole (new) - added it

Nicole You wrote this big wonderful review and for a full minute after reading it I was pretty much stuck on "corkscrew abortion." It always frustrates me when people try to apply Old World logic to Post-apocalyptic World situations, and the metaphors seem horribly awkward, plus corkscrew abortion. But I'll probably give this one a try.

karen the abortion is definitely literal. it gave me shudders

message 49: by Will (new)

Will Byrnes <>
We really need all the tips we can get on how to survive the coming post-apocalypse nightmare-scape. No such PA novel, YA or not, should be allowed on the shelves, or its electrons bouncing around in our devices, unless it can offer ways to survive the impending horror. I mean why bother unless you can help? Isn't the prospect depressing enough, with or without corkscrews?

karen get your go-bag stocked, people!
