Hofstadter analyzes the way that America's democracy and cult of the common man has shaped the development of religion, politics, business, and even education in such a way as to denigrate the life of the mind and the exercise of the intellect. This books seems perceptive and rings true as we listen to the rhetoric of politicians. The last section of the book gets bogged down in topical issues of the early 1960s.
