Pretty Amy (Pretty Amy, #1)

Short Introduction: After their dates stand them up on prom night, Amy and her friends feel betrayed and angry. After an incident occurs, Amy finds herself in a lot of trouble with her parents, her school, and the law. Separated from her best friends who make her feel like she's someone, Amy is lost. Her days are filled with appointments, work at her part time job, and more often than not, fights with her mother.
With her parents, lawyer, and coworker looking out for her best interests and pushing her to make the right choice, Amy feels suffocated. She makes some hasty decisions along the way and begins to question her so called friends.
My Thoughts: My first thought after finishing this book was, "Wow! This is an amazing debut." What really made me like Pretty Amy is that it kept me guessing. I never felt like I knew what was going to happen.
Amy is such a relatable character. I'm guessing that not a lot of girls have been in the same position as her, but everyone can identify with her feelings of wanting to belong and be cared for. No matter how much fun it looks like in movies and TV, high school is a difficult world.
I really felt bad for Amy's mother throughout this story. As her misguided attempts to help her daughter increased, Amy lashed out and resisted. While I did feel that Amy was being unnecessarily rude to her parents, the scenes where they fighted were very realistic.
If that isn't enough to sell you on this book, let me just say that it is very funny! Lisa Burstein seriously writes the funniest lines, making Amy come off as a bit of a smart aleck. This story had me laughing a lot!
My Rating: 5 stars
