Although John Henry is technically a folk tale, I think it is historical fiction too because it ties in the historical event of building train tracks with new machines. Also, you can just tell it takes place in history. This book was very interesting and I think kids would love it because John is such a powerful man and the things he can do are fascinating. I liked how there was a lot of personification, like when the animals were "ooooohing" at John or the sun and moon crying. Things like that make it fun for the kids too. The end when John just died, was shocking. Maybe it's just me, but I definitely sensed a big religious message in this story, making John seem like Jesus. Great book and great pictures.
