While it's clear right off the bat that Diaz is an amazingly talented writer, the first part of the story, the modern-day tale of a fat teenage nerd in New Jersey, didn't grip me. But the next section (told from his sister Lola's point of view) and the next (the story of his mother's childhood in the Dominican Republic and then his grandparents' lives under a totalitarian regime) had me turning the pages like mad. A powerpull portrait of life in the DR under Trujillo's dictatorship as well as the lives of Dominicans in the United States. It's hard to sum up both the heartbreak and humor in a short review.
