This is an incredibly well written story, which of course is not a surprise coming from Jeff Mann. The intimacy between the two main characters is convincing and endearing. The tension of the war and hatred are palpable. Now, as a historian, I must say that much of it is implausible in terms of the Civil War era and realities of that period. So don't read it to learn about the Civil War. It's a modern southern story set in the past - and it does a marvelous job of being just that. Mann is a good writer; Lethe Press publishes some solid stuff. And both did it again.
