Taking this to Kauai...

...This book is incredibly fun to read--at every turn there was something to discover (Will they be killed? What's in that cabin?), and the characters were well-drawn and interesting.

I was going to give this book 4 stars, because it's pleasantly readable, and the prose itself is really nice, but something about it felt, in the end, not real. Maybe a little antiseptic? Not sure--Patrick said it feels like an old movie about the siege of Leningrad, rather than a real story about the events. That's a great way of putting it, I think.

Oh, and I totally hated the final scene, which was so cheesy I groaned and threw the book down. This might've been my reason for taking away that 4th star. What can I say? I'm the Simon Cowell of goodreads.

Aside from these flaws, I admired the storytelling in this novel, and enjoyed reading it.

(Also: Patrick told me that Benioff, who's married to Amanda Peet and moonlights as a successful screenwriter, looks like Eric Bana, so for the second half of the novel I had a big old crush on the author. What if he and I were trapped in some shed with illiterate Russian peasants? Would he lean close for the body heat? Would he make a move? I'd like to think so.)

Hillary Sort of random but I read this in Kauai too! Maybe I'm too much of an easy audience but by the time the story had gone off to the land of the completely fantastical I didn't care because I had been won over by the characters so early on.
