Darn you, Goodreads, for not allowing half stars! I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could.
I'd love to round up to four stars, but the writing just wasn't up there for me.
The characters were realistic, their circumstances were gripping, and the stream of consciousness writing style was a great choice for telling the story. I felt like I was in Bonnie's mind, resenting Layla and wanting to slap "the glossies." I wanted to hug the junior cadets and practice fire starting techniques.
This book reminded me of how very grateful I am for the things I take for granted every day. Like clean underwear, a variety of healthy (and not-so-healthy) food, a pillow, running water and a toothbrush. I could add 500 items to this list just by jotting down the items and comforts within a 40-foot circumference of where I sit typing this review.
This was a great read. It's not just another Lord of the Flies, though one can't help but think of it. I'm seriously considering a re-read of LOTF just to compare and contrast. The girls in this book were brave and capable. I hope I'd have their courage and endurance under similar circumstances. This would be a great book club read; endless situational discussions.
