So happy Jack Gantos won the Newbery! I'm really looking forward to this one.

Loved it.I like all his characters: Jack, Joey and Rotten Ralph, and the young Jack Gantos in this one doesn't disappoint. Set in Norvelt, PA c. 1962 this is a quiet community filled with eccentric characters and a string of old ladies dropping dead. Nose bleeds, obituaries, Hells Angels, rat poison--it's all here, crammed into the summer when 10 year old Jack is grounded for firing his Father's gun. I think it would make a very funny read-aloud to the older grades. Reminded me a bit of Richard Peck's A Year Down Yonder and A Long Way from Chicago.
