Scalzi has the best first sentences... which almost makes up for a truly cheesy ending sentence. Almost. It was a good, quick read though, and the emotional development of the characters (this is number three in the 'Old Man's War' series) felt more natural, and the action scenes were as fluid and interesting as usual. The characters and dialoge are still a bit stiff, but they do seem to be improving from the first two in the series.

This book reminded me a bit of the cancelled TV show "Firefly", perhaps because I've been watching it a lot lately and perhaps because it's a campy, quick paced take on future space colonization- crazy advanced technology mixed with an old west attitude-- like steampunk, if steampunk took itself even less seriously.
