I loved William's "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" series, so I was excited about this one. Unfortunately the main character was such a drag -unsympathetic and most aggravatingly whiny - that it was a burden to finish this book. I kept hoping for Theo to shut up and get on with it, but in my recollection, it never happened to any satisfaction. Williams' characters are often unpolished at start, but at least Simon (who starts out at 14 in Dragonbone Chair) does evolve noticably over the course of the series and always had my sympathy. First deal for me in liking a fantasy novel is usually if I "fall in love" with a character. Not here. Not at all.
