I'm going back to read some of Parker's earlier work that I'd missed. Perchance to Dream is, I think, an example that shows that he was really a more talented writer than he is generally given credit for being. This is not just some guy who is trying to copy Raymond Chandler - this could be Chandler's reincarnation, it is so well crafted. Like both authors, this book is not great literature but great entertainment. Unlike most more modern heroes, who are litereally invinceable, Marlow spends a lot of this book getting roughed up - rather refreshing. A good read.
