I love Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson and the original works of Arthur Conan Doyle. It is never easy to reproduce already existing characters, especially when they have been alive in the minds of readers for more than a century. And to bring back the brilliant, yet arrogant-sarcastic mind of Sherlock Holmes and the caring, yet fierce and loyal behavior of John Watson is a real challenge.

Anthony Horowitz mastered this challenge brilliantly. This book is everything you expect a Sherlock Holmes novel to be. It is fast paced; there was not even a single page where I wanted to put it down. There’s a thrilling and horrifying case waiting for the only consulting detective in the world which can absolutely keep up with Doyle’s original ones. There’s a bunch of terrifying criminals, that even Mycroft is afraid of (that’s a first, I guess).

And then there is of cause a lot of Sherlock’s brilliancy – he appears almost human in parts of this book. I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between John and Sherlock – or foremost, how John can stand to befriend someone like Sherlock, he would drive me nuts. They are so very different, yet so alike all the same. Anthony Horowitz manages to show all this beautifully and I was really sad to lay this book – like every other one – aside at the end.
