I've been on an 'expanded universe' kick recently, and really enjoy the way authors can swim in this fictional worlds we already know so much about. That being said, I was a little disappointed with 'Ship of the Line'. It works far better as a collection of short stories: The crew of the Bozeman stuck in a time loop and thrown into the future, Picard interacting with a holographic Kirk, Picard's mission to Cardassia. Unfortunately they never jelled together into a strong narrative from beginning to end. It was more like Carey was giving us a documentary about these characters and what happened to them during a certain time period as opposed to a connected story.

Still, a fun read.
