The first appearance of Mary Morsten would only be believable in a 19th century romance. Love at first sight is very hard to pull off by an author, but because the Sherlock stories are so “Romantic” as written from Watson’s point of view it almost seems plausible. That and the complete non “Romantic” Sherlock who states that no woman is dependable, that’s why Watson ready to believe Mary to be a shining example of all womanhood after a brief interview and carriage ride is such a great partner for the cynical Holmes. Nice plot and good Holmes detection early on drives the story.
