I remember enjoying this one. At times, it gets lost in its descriptions of surroundings (I can only indulge to so much of gothic buildings and ivy plants), at other times it loses itself in background information about the characters, and last, most importantly perhaps, it loses some of its greatness in its attempt to be way too many things at once.
However, the great thing is that, if you manage to avoid the above short-comings, you will find that the many things that it attempts to be, it greatly succeeds in.
A wonderful review for the book can be found here: http://www.reviewsofbooks.com/rule_of... (not mine). I don't agree with everything the reviewer says, but then again, it's been long since I read it. Maybe the dialogues are indeed chunky. I don't have that impression, but I could be wrong.
All in all, I'd say that this is a wonderful thriller, in the Catherine Neville/Dan Brown/Tome Egeland/etc genre, rather slow paced (specially in the greater chunk of the beginning).
