Musim libur sekolah. Selesai ujian kelulusan atau kenaikan kelas, anak-anak menikmati liburan dengan suka-cita. Mereka bermain sepanjang hari tiada bosannya. Memang dunia mereka adalah dunia bermain-main yang tak akan pernah selesai.
Hanya mereka? Oh, tidak! Pada orang-orang dewasa juga bersemayam jiwa kanak-kanak yang ternyata suka bermain-main pula. Lihatlah pada komputer, telpon genggam atau perangkat orang dewasa lainnya, terselip di dalamnya media permainan yang secara sengaja menjadi ajang main-main bagi orang dewasa pada jam-jam kantor maupun di luar jam kantor. Lihat pula dalam bentuk yang lebih sederhana dan dilakukan oleh masyarakat luas, di pojok areal parkir, sudut kampung, atau ujung trotoar di depan pertokoan, para orang dewasa asyik bergerombol bermain catur atau gaple dalam durasi yang biasanya lebih dari separuh hari.
Jadi aktivitas kita sejak masa kanak-kanak hingga dewasa sesungguhnya hanyalah bermain-main. Bekerja sekalipun sesungguhnya bermain-main. Perhat...more

Lihatlah pada komputer, telpon genggam atau perangkat orang dewasa lainnya, terselip di dalamnya media permainan yang secara sengaja menjadi ajang main-main bagi orang dewasa pada jam-jam kantor maupun di luar jam kantor. Lihat pula dalam bentuk yang lebih sederhana dan dilakukan oleh masyarakat luas, di pojok areal parkir, sudut kampung, atau ujung trotoar di depan pertokoan, para orang dewasa asyik bergerombol bermain catur atau gaple dalam durasi yang biasanya lebih dari separuh hari.
Jadi aktivitas kita sejak masa kanak-kanak hingga dewasa sesungguhnya hanyalah bermain-main. Bekerja sekalipun sesungguhnya bermain-main. Perhatikan, betapa asyiknya operator crane di pelabuhan yang dengan tuas dan tombol dapat memindahkan butiran jagung dari kapal curah ke hoper untuk kemudian dibawa ke pabrik pakan dengan truk atau kontainer. Betapa asyiknya anak kandang setiap kali memberi makan ayam-ayamnya. Begitu masuk kandang, ayam-ayam itu bergegas menjulurkan leher keluar menyambut kedatangannya. Dan lihatlah ketika pakan sudah tertaburkan merata, mereka serentak mematuk-matuk pakan bersama-sama.
Pekerjaan kantoran pun tak kalah mengasyikkan, tust kayboard, mesin faximile, telepon, dan alat-alat perkantoran yang lain, adalah media bermain-main yang mengasyikkan bagi karyawan. Betapa indah dan nikmatnya bila setiap pekerjaan dihayati seperti anak-anak yang sedang bermain-main.
Ketika kawan saya (Desianto B. Utomo, Vice President Feed Technology PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia) belajar di Inggris selama enam tahun, anak-anaknya masuk pendidikan dasar di sana. Pada pedidikan setingkat TK sampai tahun pertama SD mereka terus diajak bermain-main, membuat kue, bermain sandiwara, menanam biji-bijian, praktik mencampur warna, dan lain sebagainya. Betapa bangganya ketika di rumah ia mempraktikkan membuat kue lalu mempersilahkan seluruh keluarga mencicipi kue karya sendiri. Di lain waktu betapa imajinatifnya anaknya ketika memerankan Raja Arthur dan menjadikan bapak – ibu nya di rumah sebagai punggawa yang dia atur ini-itu.
Tidak ada pekerjaan rumah, tidak ada menghafal abjad atau angka-angka. Kurikulum pendidikan dasar kita di mata mereka dinilai sangat hebat, selepas TK anak-anak di Indonesia sudah bisa membaca. Tapi ternyata tidak merangsang kreativitas dan kemandirian si anak, karena ya itu tadi, kurang bermain-main! Bermain-main bagi kurikulum pendidikan Inggris bukan main-main. Dan hasilnya bukan main!
Tahun ajaran baru kali ini, anak gadisnya yang dulu TK dan SD di Inggris, baru saja lulus SMA di sini. Untuk melanjutkan kuliah ia ingin kembali ke Inggris (lagi). Beberapa waktu lalu, ia menyampaikan rencana dan argumentasinya mengapa ia ingin belajar di sana -- termasuk disiplin ilmu yang dipilihnya sendiri. Setelah kami tanya ini-itu dan ia dengan percaya diri sanggup melaksanakan agendanya itu, kami merestui. Dan dirinya menitipkan kata Selamat belajar anakku, selamat bermain-main!
Dari apa yang diungkap di atas, ternyata saya temukan dalam buku Totto Chan. Anak-anak memiliki karakter yang natural. Jiwa mereka bebas penuh rasa ingin tahu. Dan dunia pendidikan kita sering menjadi pembatas. Membatasi ruang gerak dan kreativitas mereka. Pendidikan kita sering menanamkan program-program tanpa kompromi yang membuat mereka seperti robot.
Dunia sekolah terkadang menjadi tempat yang menakutkan. Saya melihat dan meperhatikan keponakan-keponakan saya -- maklum saya belum jadi ayah-- yang sering mengeluh saat sekolah. Berbagai macam buku dijejalkan ke dalam tas mereka. Dan sekolah berlangsung dari pagi hingga sore hari. Setelah pulang tak ada aktivitas yang bisa mereka lakukan selain duduk melepas lelah bersama televisi. Dan waktu malam yang santai dihabiskan dengan mengerjakan segudang PR yang aduhai banyaknya. Singkat kata, sekolah tidak menjadi komunitas yang menyenangkan. Semua dilakukan dengan tujuan hanya menjadi pintar menurut standar rapot. Kakak saya, sebagai orang tua mencoba berdiskusi mengenai masalah itu. Namun, sang guru juga berkilah dirinya juga dikejar target-target yang harus dilewati. Sedih, tapi itulah realita pada umumnya.

Sedih emang ngeliat dunia pendidikan di indo :(
Mau masuk SD ada ujian calistung. Jadilah anak2 TK 'dipaksa' bisa baca, bisa nulis, dan bisa matematika. Saya dengar dari beberapa teman, bbrp sekolah TK malah menerapkan hukuman, misal berdiri di depan kelas, kalo si anak tidak mengerjakan PR. Beberapa sekolah TK lainnya tidak lagi memasukkan agenda nyanyi2 dan bermain2.

Yup, seharusnya pendidikan pra sekolah adalah tempat bermain yang menyenangkan. Tempat untuk memacu kretivitas dan perhatian terhadap lingkungan --seperti yang Totto Chan. Kita masih berpedoman pada kecerdasan IQ yang dinilai dengan deret angka.

Dick Hartoko, salah satu tokoh pendidikan, pernah mengutarakan pentingnya mengedepankan pendidikan humaniora: yang memanusiakan manusia. Antitesis dari pendidikan robot tadi.
Di SMA gue dapatkan/nikmati pendidikan ini dengan biaya Rp 50.000,- per bulan. Tapi anakku? Anakmu? Keponakanku? Keponakanmu?

jadi inget gieb waktu ngebahas buku ini juga. gieb malah berujar kira-kira gini:
repot bener ngomongin sistem pendidikan, wong banyak anak yang sekarang nggak bisa sekolah
halah! ini juga beneeeeeer banget.
jadi pointnya:
beruntunglah keponakanmu itu, yang meskipun terlihat seperti kalah perang, tapi mereka tidak terkalahkan oleh sistem.

Aku pernah mengalami sekolah yang menyenangkan. Saat itu guru bahasa inggris SMU ku mengajar lepas dari buku diktat dan kurikulum. Baginya bahsa inggris harus dinikmati bukan dihapalkan arti tiap kata. Makanya pas ngajar pake lagu, puisi, drama, nonton film. Dan anak-anak bebas mo nanya apa aja termasuk ngartiin lagu yang sedang in n buat surat cinta pake bahasa inggris... Dan hebatnya, nilai bahasa inggris teman-teman sangat memuaskan.

Guru Sejarah mengubah pelajaran hapalan menjadi pelajaran layaknya "indiana Jones" buat gue.
Guru bahasa Inggris gue bahkan tidak pernah marah dan menasehati gue untuk rajin masuk kelas walau telat. He he he abis kelasnya dia pagi dan gue jadi males masuk. Kadung di kantin. Tapi itu malah bikin gue niat bangun pagi dan menikmati kelas yang tidak membuat murid bodoh jadi malu...
Gue masih inget pas dipanggil karena kemaren gak masuk dan dinasehati di pintu kelas, gue cuma diem dan nunduk. Sebodo temen2 gue yang cekikikan di belakang. Gak berani ngelawan orang sebaik dia. Takut kualat!
