The book “How to Be Black” was hilarious at times I found myself laughing out loud. The best part of the book is Mr. Thurston’s ability to emulate the educated satire of Ishmael Reed. I learned a lot about myself and about others through an educated man. I recommend this book and “Stuff White People Like” by Christian Lander placed on the shelf of any person that appreciates cultural differences and can laugh at the way we all play around the edges of society’s stereotypes.
For those who read the book, yes I did buy this book as my one Black History Month’s required reading. Yes, I laughed at myself for the author’s ability to cut to quick in the first chapter. What I learned from this book I will forever cherish. Here is what I learned: You want to know how to be black, just be yourself bottom-line. Our country and culture is way too young to have ridge traditions. America is changing its cultural norms at the blink of an eye. What I really am is a part of this wonderful melting pot and I am uniquely and freely able to just be me. For those who know me, that includes being a register republican, politically progressive, economically and religiously conservative. I can watch Fox News tonight and Boondocks tomorrow. I bang my head to Heavy Metal or Rock on my spin bike and bob my head to Hip-Hop on the treadmill, I am an American! Proud of it thanks for wonderful people like Mr. Baratunde R. Thurston aka Brad to role callers….lol…read the book!
