Homeless Bird

Homeless Bird tells the sad, but inspiring story of a young Indian girl who is married off at thirteen to a sickly boy that soon dies. Koly is then stuck living with her in-laws that treat her almost as a slave. Girls of all ages will enjoy this book for its simple, yet gripping writing.
This story also illustrates how life is for many Indian women as Koly's story gets even more tragic and she is dumped by her mother-in-law in the town of widows. There Koly finds that many women become useless widows who end up on the streets after the husband's family can no longer care for them. From there her journey starts to look up. Homeless bird is both a great story, as well as educational.
I had no idea so many girls ended up shunned widows seen as a drain on their families and were often dumped in Vrindavan. Crazy. Those poor women need help, just like Koly did. This was very eye opening. I loved it and would recommend for girls from about ten to adult.
