Not bad. Citations are a little meager, and it feels like the book was padded out with stories of other polar explorations, because perhaps there wasn't enough material about this one. (But at the same time there wasn't enough material to make it a full-contest history of arctic exploration.) Not a bad read at first, but depressing by the end, when it was clear that they wouldn't be coming back.

“One of the reasons there are so many terms for conditions of ice is that the mariners observing it were often trapped in it, and had nothing to do except look at it.”

“Someone responding to intuition, to chance and fortune, often can't explain himself well.”
