HMH releases a post-humous translation of Saramago's first book in May 2012. It was originally published eight years before his acclaimed novel, Balthasar and Blimunda. The Manual of Painting and Calligraphy details Portugal in 1974 as ruled by the dictator Salazar through the eyes of 50-year-old painter, H. H. is commissioned to paint a portrait of a successful businessman, S. Saramago intertwines the philosophy of life and painting deftly with the Revolution and overthrow of Salazar's regime in the meandering, meditative lyricism that was Saramago's trademark.
