A sweet and gentle book, with characters that the author is clearly very fond of. Its origins as a serial for a magazine show through, as it's quite episodic in structure.

Lovable characters, a witty and kind-hearted narrator, and a gentle look at a society that was old-fashioned even at the time Gaskell wrote the book.
