A 2012 Newbery Honor Book. Don't let it's small size and generous illustrations fool you, this is a heavy story. Set in the Communist Soviet Union under of Stalin, this is the story of 10 year old Sasha who strives to be a Soviet Young Pioneer and hero like his father. Through two days, truths are revealed to Sasha, as his beliefs are challenged. Horrible things happen to his family and friends.
I don't think many of my students have the background knowledge needed to understand this story fully, and while it is a very interesting and thought-provoking book to read as an adult, I just don't see it connecting to kids.
