I'm not a fan of the horror genre, so I can't speak of this book's relevance as a progenitor of the modern horror novel. Rating the book on its own merits, I find it severely lacking. The story is full of melodrama, the plot is shallow, the characters are one dimensional, and the way the men treat women is annoying. I dislike the way the story is presented as diary entries/communications, as these writings end up having page spanning conversations that are recalled perfectly.

I liked Twilight more than this book.
