A relentless tale of a poverty-stricken childhood in West Virginia. Very engrossing, one wonders how the children survived such an upbringing. Some wonder how true a lot of this story is I'm sure, but the truth is that not so long ago this kind of existence was a lot more commonplace. People talk today about hard times but we haven't seen anything yet. Not as long as iPads are flying off the shelves.

This book is a good reminder that poverty might be out of sight and out of mind for many of us, but it could be right around the corner.
