Julia Alvarez's book, how the Garcia girls lost their accents, it started out with how the Garcia's family immigration to united state from Dominican Republic. i know sometimes it is hard for a group of family member to immigrate to a place that they haven't known before and settle down there. they would have to learn how to live the life that the people there live in and would be a challenge for them to fit in to their culture. their father was involve in trying to overthrow the Dominican dictator Generalissimo Trujillo and had forced the family to flee the country into the foreign land of the United States.In New York, the Garcia girls must act mature in order to be tolerant in the American's culture but they reject their dark skin and their native Spanish.
i understand how people are very stereotypical in the modern days. they would look at people's physical appearance to determine who they are but i think nothing can be seen through a naked eye. there's always lies behind the truth, you can't determine or judge something by the appearance.
i recommend this book to people who read books that consist the themes of race and ethnicity, this book captured the experiences of a immigrant to a unknown foreign country, past is not always a pain, and the future is just a dream. it explains all the experiences that people may encounter nowadays.
