2.5 stars. Better than the last, but still not back on top Betsy form. Just too dark now and you don't start reading Betsy for dark. You read it because MaryJanice Davidson took a typically dark genre and added light and air and humour. It's meant to be milk chocolate mousse, not bitter 90% cocoa solids.

This is edible, but I concur with the other comments - these later books disappoint those who have already read and enjoyed the earlier books. It's worth only recommending to those who have not read the series and have no pre-conceptions of these characters.

I love Betsy becoming stronger, but not at the expense of dragging the whole tone of the books down, down, down into the dark.
