Hardly anything spoils a sequel better than clunky back-story. I say if you're gonna read books out of order you deserve to be confused! I suppose it is appropriate in a youth series to provide the background, but I found my eyes glazing over so severely that I was hardly aware I was missing new material.

Also, I thought this book suffered slightly from making the plot fit the world. Whereas in the first book, the author has carte blanche in molding the world-building to the plot, the subsequent books must fit the already created environment. (But look who's talking; I'm no author.)

Minor complaining aside, the characters, world and plot were quite enjoyable. And I had the distinct pleasure of having book #3 at my side the very minute I finished book #2 (instead of having to wait all weekend because I picked the wrong books off the shelf, argh to self), so that was very nice.

Love this author and look forward to everything else she produces.
