It's hard to believe these were written by the same Homer.

The Iliad was terribly boring, like the dullest parts of the old testament, every time a name is mentioned, it's followed by a verbose five step accounting of who they were, what they'd been known for, and who their ancestors were.

The Odyssey was far more readable and I love pre-tolkein mythology, which may sound silly since Tolkein's so recent, but his style's influence is ubiquitous nowadays, and thta's not a complaint against him, just saying there' a lack of creativity out there. I loved the story, but the way it's told sometimes drags on too long (like how many times it lingers on the people feeding off Odysseus' wealth in his absence), and other times cuts things too short. All in all, I finished it mostly because it was on my "requisite classics" list.
