I can completely understand the hate that this book gets. A lot of it is boring, it refers to countless obscure sources and it will seem obscenely tedious... until you realize that that's the whole point. I read it over the course of about 3 months, breaking up the volumes with other books. At times I gave up but I always ended up coming back to it. In saying that, it did make me laugh a good few times and there are some very cool ideas in here. Definitely ahead of its time.

Read one volume at a time, don't try to finish the thing in a week. The characters are memorable enough that you won't forget about them if you want to take a break and read something else. Expect a challenge. It is a book that requires the reader to seriously engage with it. I'm glad I read it though.
