The author does a great job bringing the reader into the lives of a family that is struggling with secrets, tradition and prejudice. Chinese immigrants moving to a small town in Canada is interesting enough but add in their relationships to each other and a protaganist who is strong, smart and observant of the hypocrisy of what's around her, and you come out with a rich story that will leave you feeling like you're a part of their secrets and their lives.
