When I first bought this book I was curious to see how Michael set up the world around his characters with the richness of the different races history and mythology. What I found is his first work exceeded my expectations. In many ways In Her Name: Empire reminded me of the Star Wars books over the last ten years as well as the Star Trek mythology I love. Combining the thick richness of some of the greats with the science fiction genre is something that's hard to find and even harder to replicate.

Reza Gard's struggles are the heart of a coming of age story where he's taken first from his parents, then years later from his people to live among the Kreelans in a grand experiment. Throughout the book he's faced with new challenges just to survive. When the opportunity is presented to become equal with those calling him an animal he does what he does best. Keep trying.

If you like epic stories and rooting for the underdog then this si the book for you.
