Excellent apocalyptic novel set in Britain, and resonant today because the breakdown of society follows the spread of a virus that has destroyed all grass species…all cereal crops and cattle and sheep fodder. A short novel, written in 1956, with an ending that calls out for a sequel...how did the characters proceed with their lives long term?
The only thing I didn't like was the role of women in the story, which I know was in context for 1956, but I found some opinions of women expressed by male characters quite startling. I think of John Wyndham writing around the same time, and my favourite novel The Chrysalids in which there are several strong female characters.
