I re-read this because for Big Brother Big Sister we had a "reading day" where you bring in one of your favorite books and your Little brings in a book they are reading and you read together. I brought in this book because I read it CONSTANTLY when I was 13/14 (the age of my Little) and it deals with issues such as corruption, civic engagement, terminal illness and tough family situations all in the quaint setting of a diner in small town Wisconsin. It is a nice intro to deeper issues in literature. My Little brought in a memoir of a gang member of the Latin Kings. Though we have become very close in our three years together as a match, it becomes clearer to me everyday that I was a very different middle schooler than she is! She can handle some much tougher issues than I could at that age. Regardless, it was a great day, and we got a chance to read two fantastic books.
