Solid followup to A Game of Thrones. Martin proves that you CAN move on without certain characters, and armed with the knowledge that no one is safe, you actually worry when characters are placed in dangerous situations. This is such a nice change of pace from most fiction where our meta-knowledge about the importance of certain characters to the plot places them out of harms way. Imagine reading the Harry Potter books and actually WORRYING when Harry gets himself into another bad situation.

These books aren't just people getting killed off by the way. Martin weaves various plots together in ways that reward the reader for paying attention. Characters you might have thought incidental in one book show up in much more important ways later on. Personalities and motivations never feel forced, and you get to watch almost every character grow and learn in wonderful ways.
