I usually stick pretty closely to detective fiction, and to cozies at that, so this felt a little out of my normal range. I was drawn to it mostly because I'll read anything that's set in the Shetlands and/or far north. I was really unsure about it at first - after the first few chapters, I thought it was shaping up to be the kind of thing my mom reads, aka political/legal/crime thrillers. Not that there's anything wrong with the genre at all, mind you, but it's just not my cup of tea. Once I got into the novel, and particularly the detective, the implausibly named Jimmy Perez, I was fairly hooked though. Just suspenseful enough, not overly grisly or gritty, but a really enjoyable mystery/thriller. I'll definitely give the next book in the series a shot.
