A friend in our book club recommended this, calling it a "real page-turner." I read it and enjoyed the author's style (it reminded me a little of Steinbeck; it was that good in places), but I have to disagree about the book being compelling. It's an interesting true story about an African-American man in the U.S. south who became elected as a city councilor and tried to make a difference in his community. The ending, however, is a downward spiral of disappointment and disillusionment. It may be useful to those who are particularly interested in race relations in the U.S. South c. 1970s.
