A Carl Hiaasen book set in Florida based around animals/nature. I guess there's something to be said for working in your comfort zone.
With his father out of commission after being hit on the head by a falling frozen iguana and his mother in China, it's up to Wahoo Cray (named after the wrestler not the fish) to bring in money for the mortgage payment. The only option is an animal wrangling job for the reality tv show "Expedition Survival!" The show's star is a stereotypical Hollywood jerk who couldn't "survive" his way out of a paper bag. Cameras roll. Hijinks ensue. Along the way Hiaasen deals with more serious topics than the state of America's tv viewing habits by introducing Tuna, a resilient, fast-thinking girl on the run from her drunken abusive father.
Chomp was an enjoyable but predictable read. Nature lovers and fans of Hiaasen's other middle grade books will eat this story up. Chomp will be a solid addition to any school or library collection.
