Erdrich is a paragon. It's frustrating to me here that this book is not more stridently identified with magic realism (although it is possible the speculative elements can be interpreted strictly subjectively, it takes a few leaps to do so), but beyond that it's a wonderful story with pathos and humor that's told in few words, with deceptive simplicity. The characters feel both real and larger-than-life. I won't go into a summary (since the blurb settles it pretty well). Let it suffice to say I'm glad I get to keep this one.
