I love Patrick Ness and Siobhan Dowd and really wanted this to be a 5* but just didn't 'connect' with it. It's well written & structured, but I couldn't really engage with Connor and the other characters were motifs really. Perhaps it just wasn't what I expected of either of them. (ie this wasn't a Siobhan Dowd novel and it didin't feel like Patrick Ness either). I like the storytelling idea & the connection with 'truth' but I think Helen Grant does it better in The Vanishing of Katerina Linden. I liked the fairytale element but I thought that was done better in The Magician's Elelphant. It is moving and yes I did cry a bit at the end but I didn't feel passionate about it. Have just thought about it a bit more and have made some connections between the story line, Siobhan Dowd and Patrick Ness's tribute to her; so moved it up to a 4*. Very moving/clever as a tribute rather than just a story.
