I loved this novel. It's been a while since I've read one that is as compelling and absorbing as this. I haven't read Jane Eyre since I was a high school freshman, and have forgotten much of the story, so I really can't tell you how closely this follows the classic. But this stands on its own entirely as a novel you can get lost in. Gemma is a plucky heroine to root for, although her choices in the second half of the book sometimes made me cringe. Livesey once again does not disappoint with this novel of self-discovery and the search for a place to call home.
