The Pearl (Steinbeck "Essentials")
by John Steinbeck
“The Pearl” is a straightforward fable concerning the evils visited upon a Mexican fisherman, Kino, and his family upon finding The Pearl of the World, which he believes will make him rich and provide them with future opportunities to rise above their station. The theme of the story is rather simplistic and mildly sententious; Steinbeck obviously esteems what he portrays as the interconnectedness of the indigent fishing community and their close relationship to the natural world. But what the tale lacks in complexity is made up for by Steinbeck’s extraordinary prose, particularly his evocations of the natural world and the suspenseful finale. A short but rich read.

Based on the Steinbeck I've read, I think he must always be at least 'mildly sententious,' and his prose, as here, is what makes up for that.

Hi Teresa - this fable has certainly got me interested in reading more Steinbeck, as I've not done so before. I have my eye on his short story collection, but it's unfortunately going to have to wait - and probably a fair while - as it looks like I've got a reading-heavy training course coming up...and my wife might well file for divorce if I order any more books in the next six months...
