I find self-help books interesting in that the authors write about their life philosophy, share the things that have worked for them -- but then they decide (rather arbitrarily) that these things will work for me, too, even though I am a completely different person. I am interested in life philosophies and the things that have worked for other people, but making the jump to "of course that will work for me, too!" has never really worked, even in those cases when I wanted it to.

Interesting guy, interesting life, interesting "here's how I did it" story. I don't know that it's applicable to people who are not very similar to the author, but it kept my attention through to the end and only rarely got preachy.
