Very neatly this skims over the attempted literal character assassination of Holmes and brings more negaging mysteries for him to solve. Interestingly here, Conan Doyle just about gives up on the idea that Watson has some other life other than his association with Holmes. We are also given a few examples of the morality of the times particularly towards women.
