This book was an surprisingly fun read, and I'm really glad I picked it up. The plot kicks off right away with an invading warlord at the gates and conflict between members of the royal family being pushed to the limits by the severity of the situation. The heroine is strong and selfless, and sticks to her principles even when faced with slavery and possibly death. The romance is somewhat predictable, but in a delicious way. It makes you excited to watch it unfold, even though you have a tolerably good idea of how it's going to go. The world is rich and interesting, and in particular I really appreciate how Vaughan has depicted the invading plains warriors and the besieged city folk. The cultures of each society are clearly very different from each other, but neither is depicted as being somehow more enlightened or superior to the other. This approach to world building makes a good story that much more pleasurable to read.
