Terry and Laura Sheldon are trying to move forward after losing their twin daughters in a flood. They agree to foster a young black child, Alfred, but it is a struggle to make the unconventional family meld. As his past and feelings unfold to the reader, we better understand Alfred and his relationships with the Sheldons and other community members. I enjoyed the well-written story, but I would have liked to know more about how these relationships formed. The other characters were not privy to the insights into Alfred's personality, and I was not clear about what they saw in this uncommunicative child.
