recommended for: fans of Southern fiction with "zip"
This was an enjoyable read.
It's about an older woman, whose husband, a respectable banker, has recently died and left her a bunch of money. Just as she's trying out living on her own for the first time in 40 years, her dead husband's mistress shows up on her porch out of the blue, and drops off the young boy she had with him, and runs off, supposedly to go to beauty school. To add to the shock that her husband had been living a double life, and wasn't as respectable as he seemed, it seems like everyone wants her money, and will do anything to get it.
This was funny and fast paced, with a great sense of voice and place. There was enough going on to keep me reading, and enjoying what I was reading.
My only critique was that I think either some things were left out, or were dealt with so quickly that I missed them. For example, one of the first things she does with the young boy is she takes him to get his hair cut, and talks about needing to buy him clothes, but I never read that s...more
