Travels with Charley is Steinbeck's story of his journey across the US, starting in the North, across the Dakotas and the Northwest, which he enters with excitement. The nature of the story though begins to change as he begins the return journey which brings him through Texas and the South. He goes through them in a near begrudging and reluctant mood, and it shows in his writing as he battles against the ugliness happening throughout the civil rights movement and the battle for Racial equality in the deep south.

All together, Steinbeck shows his virtuosity of observation, which aided in the real world feel able to be presented in his classics, but the lack of an overall arch to this story causes a lack of satisfaction. What's worse, is he knows it and several times states as much.
