This was an engrossing and thought-provoking read, and in today's political climate it hit uncomfortably close to home. The novel drops us into the life of Hannah Payne after she has been sentenced for the crime of having an abortion - in the dystopian future this novel sets out, this is criminal offense. However, only the most violent criminals are sent to prison. The rest are injected with a virus that turns their skin colors and released back out into the world, where they face the hatred and fear of the rest of the community. Hannah was raised in an ultra-conservative religious family, and it was so interesting to see her grapple with how to maintain her faith in God in the face of the sheer cruelty she encounters and the destruction of her life as she has known it. She is a wonderful, independent woman who finds an inner strength and determination that I don't think she knew she had.
I thought this was well-written, we weren't bogged down with lots of subplots (though there was plenty of opportunity) and it ended at the perfect spot. I highly recommend that you pick this up, even if you're not normally a fan of dystopian future stories. There's a lot more going on here than what that two-word description can convey.
